Lian Ye Yao originated as a private voicebank on the UTAU engine, demonstrated in 2016. This voicebank was never released and no news has been heard about it since.
On June 22nd, 2019, a teaser was posted to Twitter featuring his silhouette alongside another character. This was followed up on June 23rd with a demonstration posted to SoundCloud, announcing a Japanese voicebank as well as plans to record a Chinese voicebank after its release.
On July 19th, 2019, a sample of Lian Ye Yao's updated voicebank singing "Peek-a-boo" by Red Velvet was posted to his developer's Mastodon account. It was stated to partially include the voicebank's D4 set, though it was early in development.
His surname, Lián (连), means “lotus" in Chinese. Yè (夜) means “night”, and Yáo (谣) refers to a "popular ballad" used by poets and composers to make lyrical ballads.
Work in progress.
